This course is available to students aged between 15 and 19 and is designed to help students who are considering applying to study at a University in the UK in the future or those who have already been offered a place and are starting their university course imminently. Weekly university visits are included.

Course format

This course runs in conjunction with Leaders and Entrepreneurs of the future. Students share the same Core English and Learning & Innovation lessons, BSS Experience and some recreational activities and cultural excursions.

Location

The course takes place at Moulton College, located on a large, well-equipped campus within walking distance of Moulton village and a short drive away from the town of Northampton.

English Levels

The course welcomes students of all English levels from B1 Intermediate to C2 Proficiency.

Lessons

There are 18½ hours per week with 4 types of lessons: Academic English, Business English, Learning & Innovation and Focus University. The objectives of the lessons are to improve students’ receptive and productive language skills, introduce them to some UK university fundamentals and enhance students’ their ability to communicate and operate in the 21st century. Students develop key skills required through the application process to university and learn key fundamentals of studying and living in the UK university.

Mission: Integration!

This takes place on Sunday evenings and consists of icebreaker and get-to-know-you activities to help new students integrate into school life and meet continuing students.

Housewarming!

On Monday evenings, students take part in a series of house-based games and activities to help them build new and consolidate existing friendships with other students from the same house.

Sports & Leisure

Students take part in our Leisure programme where they can choose between a selection of different sports and leisure activities.

Pro Options

The Pro Options programme is optional and allows students to specialise in one sport or other recreational activity for the whole week and is designed to increase their skills, techniques, and knowledge in their chosen option.

BSS Experience featuring True Me

This is our evening entertainment programme that consists of a series of fun challenges and events designed to develop students personal and social skills, self-confidence, and authenticity.

Cultural Programme

Saturday and Sunday excursions allow students to visit places of cultural or historical interest or take part in a recreational activity with their friends.

Lessons

Academic English

These lessons are designed to improve understanding of written and spoken academic texts, develop lecture and note-taking skills, organise and write academic essays, develop debating skills on academic topics and enhance independent learning skills and critical thinking.

Business English

These lessons focus on developing English skills and expanding vocabulary within business contexts such as international trade, commerce, finance, insurance, banking, and office settings. Lessons help students practise and enrich their communication skills and refine their grammatical structures to improve their confidence to conduct business in English.

Learning & Innovation

These task-based lessons enable students to work collaboratively to research, discuss and create projects that reflect their knowledge, skills, and personality while developing strategies that are essential for success in the 21st century. The projects have been specially created to help develop the students’ capabilities in each of the 4Cs that form the core of the 21st Century Learning curriculum: Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking.

Focus university

These lessons are designed to develop some key skills required throughout the application process and introduce students to some fundamentals of studying and living in a UK university such as:

  • Academic essay writing

  • Application process and guidance

  • British culture & values

  • Independent study skills

  • Interview training

  • Mock student union

  • Research skills

  • Presentation skills

  • Teamwork and collaboration

  • University life in the UK

The course includes weekly university visits on Wednesday afternoons.

Exam Courses

Students aged 16 and over can choose to study for the IELTS exam.

IELTS is an essential qualification for students seeking a place at a UK or English-speaking university and is used by many multi-national companies to establish applicants’ level of English.

Students can also prepare for the Cambridge C1 Advanced exam.

All exam courses offer dedicated preparation and intensive exam practice instead of Academic/Business English and Learning and Innovation.

Students sit the exam at an external testing centre at the end of their course.
